Agentic Commerce for Hotels: ACP, AP2, MCP Explained
Agentic Commerce
ACP, AP2 and MCP explained for hotels

Agentic commerce means an AI agent finds and pays for something on a person's behalf. For hotels, three standards do most of the work: OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) and Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) handle checkout and payment trust, and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an agent query and book a property's systems. None of the three decides whether a booking goes direct.

What is agentic commerce?
Agentic commerce is shopping and booking done by an AI agent that searches, compares and pays within limits the person sets. Perplexity added in-app hotel booking in March 2025 (PhocusWire), and larger platforms followed in 2026. Google AI Mode began taking US hotel bookings with Google Pay on August 27, 2026 (Skift), and Meta's Muse, launched September 8, 2026, books travel and checks out with a one-time card from Stripe's Link (Meta). Booking Holdings said on August 4, 2026 that traffic from large language models was "still significantly below 1% of our room nights" (Investing.com transcript).
Which agentic commerce protocols matter for hotels?
Six agentic commerce standards and programs touch a hotel booking, and they split into two groups. MCP connects an agent to a system that holds rooms and rates. ACP, AP2, Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), Visa Intelligent Commerce and Mastercard Agent Pay cover checkout and payment. The table summarizes each one from its own launch page.
| Standard | Built by | What it does | Hotel's role | Announced |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model Context Protocol (MCP) | Open-source standard | Connects AI apps to data, tools and workflows | Expose availability and booking through an MCP server | Supported by Claude and ChatGPT |
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | OpenAI and Stripe | Checkout between buyer, agent and business; open source, Apache 2.0 | Business stays merchant of record | Sep 29, 2025 |
| Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) | Google with 60+ organizations | Signed "mandates" that prove what the user authorized | Merchant receives a verifiable cart and payment | Sep 16, 2025 |
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Google with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart | Shared language for commerce journeys; works with AP2 | Business remains merchant of record | Jan 11, 2026 |
| Visa Intelligent Commerce | Visa | Tokenized "AI-Ready Cards" and agent identity checks | Accepts a tokenized Visa credential | Apr 30, 2025 |
| Mastercard Agent Pay | Mastercard | Mastercard Agentic Tokens for agent payments | Accepts a tokenized Mastercard credential | Apr 29, 2025 |
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)?
The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is an open standard from OpenAI and Stripe for checkout between a buyer, an AI agent and a business. Its site says ACP is open source under Apache 2.0, that "businesses maintain their customer relationships as the merchant of record," and that a business can publish its checkout "with a traditional API or MCP" (agenticcommerce.dev).
OpenAI used ACP for Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, launched September 29, 2025 with Etsy sellers. Merchants "pay a small fee on completed purchases," and the merchant handles orders, payments and fulfillment with its existing systems (OpenAI). In March 2026 OpenAI scaled Instant Checkout back, and a spokesperson said "instant checkout is moving to apps" (Retail Systems, March 10, 2026). Hotel bookings in ChatGPT run through apps from Booking.com, Expedia and hotel brands, which I cover in how AI agents book hotels.
What is Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)?
Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) is an open protocol, announced September 16, 2025, that lets a merchant check that an AI agent had the user's authority to pay. It works through mandates, "tamper-proof, cryptographically-signed digital contracts." An Intent Mandate records what the user asked for, and a Cart Mandate records the exact items and price the user approved (Google Cloud). Google built it with more than 60 organizations, including Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and Adyen, and it runs as an extension of the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol and MCP.
Google's launch post uses travel as its example: an agent asked to book "a round-trip flight and a hotel in Palm Springs" on a $700 budget deals with "airline and hotel agents, as well as online travel agencies and booking platforms." AP2 secures the payment, and the agent's search decides whether the hotel or the OTA gets the booking.
Google followed with the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), described on January 11, 2026 as an open standard for commerce journeys that "is compatible with Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)" and lets businesses integrate through MCP. Under UCP, "you remain the Merchant of Record" (Google Developers Blog).
What is MCP and how do hotels use it?
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that connects AI applications such as Claude and ChatGPT to outside data, tools and workflows (modelcontextprotocol.io). For a hotel, an MCP server is how an agent asks for availability, rates and policies and then creates or changes a reservation. OpenAI built its Apps SDK for ChatGPT on MCP (OpenAI, October 6, 2025), so the same server can sit behind a ChatGPT app.
Hotel vendors have started shipping MCP servers. Apaleo's lets agents handle tasks "from checking availability and modifying bookings" (Apaleo). Mirai made its booking engine "MCP-ready, enabling agentic reservations through ChatGPT or any other AI agent" (Mirai). Agentic Hospitality's TravelOS connects a hotel's CRS and PMS so "reservations route back through the hotel's system of record" (Hospitality Net). The setup steps are in how to get direct bookings from ChatGPT and AI agents.
How do Visa and Mastercard fit into agentic commerce?
Visa and Mastercard supply the card credentials that an AI agent pays with, so a hotel's existing card acceptance keeps working when the buyer is an agent. Visa Intelligent Commerce, introduced April 30, 2025, "replaces card details with tokenized digital credentials," and its AI-Ready Cards "confirm that a consumer's chosen agent is allowed to act on a consumer's behalf" (Visa). Mastercard Agent Pay, announced April 29, 2025, introduced Mastercard Agentic Tokens built on its existing tokenization (Mastercard).
Meta's Muse pays with Link built by Stripe, and "Link's wallet for agents generates a one-time-use card so your real card details stay hidden" (Meta). The hotel or OTA on the other end sees a card payment.
Do agentic commerce protocols decide whether a booking goes direct?
Agentic commerce protocols do not decide whether a hotel booking goes direct or through an OTA. ACP and UCP keep the business as merchant of record, and AP2 and the card tokens are payment layers that work the same for a hotel brand or for Booking.com. In Google AI Mode, "the hotel or OTA still charges the card, sends the confirmation, and offers support" (Skift, August 27, 2026).
The channel depends on who exposes bookable inventory to the agent. Hilton CEO Chris Nassetta said of the brand's rates and inventory that "nobody can get it, unless we give it to them" (Motley Fool transcript, April 28, 2026). An independent hotel without an MCP-ready booking engine reaches most agents through OTA listings, and Skift reported that Muse shops consumer sites like Expedia and Hotels.com for hotels (Skift, September 9, 2026). The case for OTAs holding that position is in why OTAs might keep winning.
What should a hotel do about agentic commerce now?
A hotel should spend its effort on inventory access and guest service, because the payment protocols reach a hotel through its booking engine, payment processor and card networks. Ask your booking engine or PMS vendor whether it offers an MCP server, ask your payment processor about agent payments, and keep rates and facts consistent across your site and OTAs (how hotels show up in ChatGPT and AI search).
After the booking is paid, the confirmation questions, changes, special requests and upsells still go to the property, as I describe in after the agent books. Conduit runs AI agents for guest messages and calls, a shared inbox and guest portals with upsells for that stage, and it is not a booking engine, payment layer or MCP distribution service. The wider question of what agents mean for OTAs is in Will AI Agents Replace Booking.com?.
FAQ
Agentic commerce standards are new and change often, so the answers below stick to what each standard's own launch page or specification site says. They draw on the protocol sites, launch posts and payment network releases linked above, read on October 8, 2026.
What is agentic commerce in travel?
Agentic commerce in travel is an AI agent searching, comparing and paying for flights or hotels on a traveler's behalf. Google AI Mode has taken US hotel bookings with Google Pay since August 27, 2026, and Meta's Muse books flights through Duffel and hotels through consumer travel sites.
What is the difference between ACP and AP2?
ACP, from OpenAI and Stripe, defines how an agent runs a checkout with a business that stays merchant of record. AP2, from Google, defines signed mandates that prove what the user authorized an agent to buy.
Is MCP a payment protocol?
MCP is not a payment protocol. The Model Context Protocol connects AI applications to outside data and tools, so a hotel uses it to let an agent check availability and create bookings. Payment runs through ACP, AP2, UCP or card network tokens.
Do hotels need to build ACP or AP2 support?
ACP and AP2 support sits in checkout and payment systems, so a hotel's booking engine and payment processor are the places to ask about it. ACP works with a compatible payment processor, with Stripe's Shared Payment Token as one supported option, and AP2 is built for agents, merchants and payment providers.
Does agentic commerce mean more direct bookings for hotels?
Agentic commerce does not by itself mean more direct bookings. The protocols work the same for a hotel brand and an OTA, so the booking goes to whoever exposes bookable inventory to the agent. Chains do this through brand apps and Google AI Mode, while many independents still reach agents through OTAs.
Who is the merchant of record in an AI agent hotel booking?
The hotel or OTA that sells the room is usually the merchant of record in an AI agent hotel booking. ACP and UCP both keep the business as merchant of record, and in Google AI Mode the hotel or OTA charges the card, sends the confirmation and offers support.
Where do these facts come from?
The facts in this explainer come from protocol specification sites, launch posts by OpenAI, Google, Visa, Mastercard and Meta, and dated trade press, all read on October 8, 2026. Check the specification sites for newer versions before building against them.
