How AI Agents Book Hotels in 2026: ChatGPT, Google, Muse
How AI Agents Book Hotels
ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Muse, Perplexity

AI agents book hotels in four different ways in 2026. Google AI Mode takes payment with Google Pay and passes the booking to the hotel or online travel agency (OTA). ChatGPT sends travelers into brand and OTA apps. Meta's Muse drives a browser through sites like Expedia, and Perplexity books through Selfbook.
I read every launch post, transcript and test report cited here on October 8, 2026. Each claim links to its source, and the full list is at the end.
How does each AI assistant book a hotel?
Each AI assistant that books hotels today uses a different rail, and the rail decides who sells the room, who charges the card and who the guest calls when something goes wrong. The table compares the four assistants that take hotel bookings in the US as of October 2026, using what each company or a dated test report has published.
| Assistant | How the hotel booking happens | Who charges the guest | Who handles the stay afterwards | Launched |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Mode | Chat to compare rooms, review cancellation terms, pay with Google Pay in the chat | The hotel or OTA | The hotel or OTA sends the confirmation and offers support | Aug 27, 2026 (US) |
| ChatGPT | Brand and OTA apps inside the chat; the booking finishes on the app owner's platform | The app owner | The app owner | Oct 6, 2025 (Booking.com, Expedia) |
| Meta Muse | Hotels through a browser on consumer sites such as Expedia and Hotels.com; flights through Duffel's API | The site Muse checks out on, paid with a Stripe Link one-time card | Whichever OTA or hotel site Muse used | Sep 8, 2026 (US) |
| Perplexity | In-app booking on Selfbook's booking and payment infrastructure, with Tripadvisor reviews | Payment runs on Selfbook's technology inside Perplexity | Not stated in the launch reports | Mar 2025 |
How does Google AI Mode book a hotel?
Google AI Mode lets US travelers find, compare and pay for a hotel room inside Google's AI chat, a feature that began rolling out on August 27, 2026, according to Skift. The traveler pays with Google Pay, and the hotel or OTA still charges the card, sends the confirmation and offers support. The launch partners Skift listed are Booking.com, Choice Hotels, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG, Marriott, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham.
Marriott described its side of this in February. "The booking will be processed through AI Mode," CEO Anthony Capuano said on the company's fourth-quarter call (Skift, February 11, 2026). Every name on the launch list is a chain or an OTA, so an independent hotel that wants to show up in an AI Mode booking today is most likely to get there through one of those OTAs.
How does ChatGPT book a hotel?
ChatGPT books hotels through apps that run inside the chat. OpenAI launched apps in ChatGPT on October 6, 2025 with Booking.com and Expedia among the first pilot partners, and built the Apps SDK on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The booking itself finishes on the partner's platform. Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin described the app as "bridging the gap between planning in ChatGPT conversations and booking on Expedia" (PhocusWire).
Hotel brands built their own apps after the OTAs. On April 28, 2026, Hilton said its ChatGPT app would launch within weeks, joining Hyatt, Accor and Wyndham (Skift).
OpenAI also tried a checkout of its own. Instant Checkout launched on September 29, 2025 for Etsy sellers. In March 2026 the company scaled it back, and a spokesperson told The Information that "instant checkout is moving to apps," as quoted by Retail Systems on March 10, 2026. A hotel booking that starts in ChatGPT therefore ends in a Booking.com, Expedia or hotel-brand flow.
How does Meta Muse book a hotel?
Meta's Muse books hotels by opening a browser and shopping consumer travel sites the way a person would. Meta introduced Muse on September 8, 2026 as a personal agent that can book travel and check out with Link built by Stripe, which issues a one-time-use card. Muse had about 730,000 downloads in its first five days (Sensor Tower, via Traders Union).
Flights and hotels run on separate paths. Flights go through a direct API connection to Duffel, which covers 500+ airlines. For hotels, Skift reported that Muse opens a browser and shops consumer sites like Expedia and Hotels.com the way a person would (Skift, September 9, 2026). Duffel's own hotel product is not part of the Muse integration, and Duffel's CEO told PhocusWire that accommodations will be offered in the future.
Muse has a harder time on hotel brand sites. A BTIG note said "Hilton blocked Muse"; Hilton replied that it "is accepting bookings from various agents, including Muse", and Skift's own Muse searches hit speed bumps on Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt sites (Skift, October 2, 2026).
How does Perplexity book a hotel?
Perplexity books hotels inside its own app using Selfbook, a hotel booking and payment company, with reviews from Tripadvisor. The feature launched in March 2025 (PhocusWire). Selfbook CEO Khalid Meniri told PhocusWire that Selfbook provides "the single API to be the booking infrastructure." Selfbook's core product is a one-click booking checkout that hotels add to their own websites, and Skift's tests at launch found the Perplexity flow glitchy (Skift, March 27, 2025).
Which AI agent bookings go direct to the hotel?
AI agent bookings go direct to the hotel only when the hotel itself exposes rates and inventory to the agent. Chains do that through Google AI Mode and their own ChatGPT apps. Hilton CEO Chris Nassetta described that control on the Q1 2026 call: "nobody can get it, unless we give it to them," and "80% plus of our business is already direct" (Motley Fool transcript, April 28, 2026).
Muse's hotel path and the OTA apps in ChatGPT route the booking through an OTA. "No chain has published a number for bookings that arrived through an agent. Neither has any OTA," Hospitality.today wrote on October 5, 2026.
How many hotel bookings come from AI agents today?
AI agents drive a small share of hotel bookings so far. On August 4, 2026, Booking Holdings CFO Ewout Steenbergen said traffic from large language models, paid and unpaid, "is still significantly below 1% of our room nights" and had not moved much in recent quarters (Investing.com transcript). On the same call he said Booking is "part of the test group of OpenAI for CPC."
Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said on August 5, 2026 that "agentic traffic remains small, it's a promising channel with high purchase consideration," and that Expedia was "an early adopter of ChatGPT's latest ad product" (Motley Fool transcript). Both OTAs are paying for placement inside the assistants while the volume is still small.
What should a hotel or rental operator do about AI agent bookings?
A hotel or rental operator should first find out which rail its rooms already reach. A hotel flagged with one of the AI Mode launch chains reaches Google's agent through its brand. An independent hotel or rental reaches most agents through its OTA listings today, unless its booking engine or property management system (PMS) offers an agent connection. I cover the steps in how hotels show up in ChatGPT and AI search, and the bigger OTA question in Will AI Agents Replace Booking.com?.
Every rail in the table leaves the stay itself with the property. Google AI Mode hands support to the hotel or OTA, and a Muse hotel problem goes to "whatever support the OTA or hotel brand provides" (Travelers Today). Conduit runs AI agents that answer guest messages and calls and take action, plus guest portals for upsells and guidebooks, so it handles the work that follows a booking. Conduit is not a booking engine and does not put rooms into any of these agents. Whichever agent made the booking, the questions, changes and requests that follow arrive at the property, and our comparison of AI guest communication platforms and AI voice agents for hotel calls cover the tools for that work.
FAQ
The four assistants added hotel booking between March 2025 and September 2026, so every answer below names the assistant, the rail it books through and when that rail went live. The figures come from the launch posts, test reports and earnings calls listed at the end of this page.
Can ChatGPT book a hotel room?
ChatGPT can start a hotel booking through apps from Booking.com, Expedia and hotel brands such as Hyatt, Accor and Wyndham, and the booking finishes on that company's platform. OpenAI moved its own checkout "to apps" in March 2026, so the hotel payment happens in the partner's flow.
Can Google AI Mode book hotels?
Google AI Mode has booked hotels for US travelers since August 27, 2026. The traveler pays with Google Pay in the chat, and the hotel or OTA charges the card, sends the confirmation and handles support. Launch partners include Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Wyndham, Choice, Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline and Trip.com.
How does Meta Muse book hotels?
Meta Muse books hotels by driving a browser through consumer travel sites such as Expedia and Hotels.com, and pays with a one-time card from Stripe Link. Flights use a separate API connection to Duffel. Spot tests in October 2026 found Muse struggled on Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt sites.
Do AI agents book directly with hotels?
AI agents book directly with a hotel only when the hotel exposes its own rates and inventory, as chains do through Google AI Mode and brand apps in ChatGPT. Muse's hotel path and the OTA apps in ChatGPT book through OTAs. No chain or OTA has published how many bookings agents delivered.
How many hotel bookings come from AI agents?
Hotel bookings from AI agents are still a small share. Booking Holdings said in August 2026 that traffic from large language models was "significantly below 1%" of its room nights, and Expedia called agentic traffic "small" on its August 5, 2026 call.
Who handles changes when an AI agent books a hotel?
The hotel or OTA that sold the room handles changes and support when an AI agent books it. Google AI Mode leaves confirmation and support with the hotel or OTA, and Muse routes hotel problems to the OTA or hotel brand it booked through.
Where do these facts come from?
The facts in this guide come from company announcements, earnings call transcripts and dated trade press reports, and I read every page listed here on October 8, 2026. Agent booking changes quickly, so I plan to refresh this page after the October and November 2026 earnings calls.
