Will AI Agents Replace Booking.com? The 2026 Evidence
Will AI Replace Booking.com?
What filings and earnings calls show in 2026

AI agents are not close to replacing Booking.com. In August 2026 Booking Holdings said traffic from large language models was "significantly below 1%" of its room nights, and the AI agents that book hotels still rely on OTA inventory. When an agent does book a hotel, the sale usually goes through an OTA or a hotel brand.
I read every source on this page on October 8, 2026. Each number links to the filing, earnings call or article it came from. Agent traffic changes every quarter, so I will update this page after Booking, Expedia and Hilton report their third-quarter results.
How much hotel booking traffic do AI agents send today?
AI agents send a very small share of hotel bookings today. On Booking Holdings' second-quarter 2026 call on August 4, CFO Ewout Steenbergen said traffic from large language models, paid and unpaid, was "significantly below 1% of our room nights," with no material change over recent quarters (earnings call transcript, Investing.com). A day later, Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said "agentic traffic remains small, it's a promising channel with high purchase consideration" (Q2 2026 call transcript, The Motley Fool).
Adoption of the agents themselves is moving faster than the bookings. Meta's Muse agent, launched on September 8, 2026, recorded about 730,000 downloads in its first five days (Sensor Tower, via Börse Express). No hotel chain and no OTA has published how many bookings arrived through an agent (Hospitality.today, October 5, 2026).
How do AI agents book hotels right now?
Each major assistant books hotels a different way, and most of them route through an OTA or a hotel brand that stays in charge of the sale. The table below covers the three assistants with the most reach as of October 2026.
| Assistant | How it books a hotel | Who sells the room | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Mode | US rollout from August 27, 2026. The traveler pays with Google Pay inside the chat | The hotel or OTA charges the card, sends the confirmation and handles support. Launch partners include Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Wyndham, Choice, Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline and Trip.com | Skift |
| ChatGPT | OpenAI moved checkout "to apps" in March 2026. Booking.com and Expedia run apps inside ChatGPT | The brand or OTA behind the app | Retail Systems |
| Meta Muse | Flights go through Duffel. For hotels, Muse opens a browser and shops consumer sites such as Expedia and Hotels.com | Whichever site the agent picks, usually an OTA | Skift |
Brand websites are harder for agents to use than OTA sites. In Skift's spot tests, Muse hit errors at the room-and-rate step on Hilton, Marriott and Hyatt sites, while a rival agent completed the same searches (Skift, October 2, 2026). Hilton told Skift it "is accepting bookings from various agents, including Muse" and called the tools "in their early days."
Why do Booking and Expedia list AI agents as a risk?
Booking Holdings and Expedia both warn investors that agents could cut them out. Booking's 2025 annual report says "AI agents may further evolve into full-service booking platforms, increasing competitive pressure and disintermediating" online travel companies, and that AI-generated answers "may satisfy user intent without directing users to our services" (Booking Holdings 10-K). Expedia's report says "Any failure to effectively navigate this 'agentic' revolution could have a material adverse effect" and lists companies offering AI agents among its competitors (Expedia Group 10-K).
Booking Holdings took in $26.9 billion of revenue on $186.1 billion of gross bookings in 2025, about 14.5% of what travelers spent, and spent $8.19 billion on marketing, a substantial majority of it performance marketing on search engines (primarily Google), affiliates, meta-search and social media (Booking Holdings 10-K). Expedia's revenue was 12.3% of $119.6 billion in gross bookings (Expedia Group 10-K).
What are Booking and Expedia doing about AI agents?
Booking and Expedia are buying their way into the agents. Steenbergen said Booking is "part of the test group of OpenAI for CPC," a paid placement program, and CEO Glenn Fogel said Booking was "one of the first" partners on Google's agentic booking (Q2 2026 call, Investing.com). Gorin said Expedia was "an early adopter of ChatGPT's latest ad product" in the second quarter, and Expedia announced the acquisition of Layla, an AI conversational planning app (Q2 2026 call, The Motley Fool). Google's Direct Offers pilot, which shows paid travel offers inside AI-assisted trip planning, started with Booking Holdings and Expedia before adding IHG (Skift, July 28, 2026).
Both companies also run their own assistants. Fogel described Priceline's "agentic AI travel assistant called Penny" (Booking Q2 2026 call). Expedia added natural-language search and agents such as Property Expert, and Gorin said those features "are not driving conversion right now," while giving "over 60% more information about traveler intent" (Expedia Q2 2026 call).
Do hotel chains expect agents to bring them more direct bookings?
The big chains expect agents to hurt OTAs more than hotels. Hilton CIO Michael Leidinger said in September that large language models have put OTAs "under real threat," because a chatbot can now do the aggregation that made OTAs valuable (Skift, September 29, 2026). Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano made a similar case to the Wall Street Journal in June (MarketScale summary).
The chains start from a strong position. Hilton CEO Chris Nassetta said "80% plus of our business is already direct" on the April 28, 2026 call, and added that for Hilton's rates and inventory, "nobody can get it, unless we give it to them" (Q1 2026 transcript, The Motley Fool). IHG says bookings it takes through Google's AI Mode are "still processed as direct bookings" (IHG half-year results 2026).
Citrini Research, an investment research firm, argues that when an agent books with the supplier, the hotel "still gets the customer" (Citrini Research, Agentic Reality, September 22, 2026). The chains' own annual reports are more careful. Hilton's report says language models entering travel booking could divert bookings from its direct channels, and Marriott's warns of "potentially eroding brand loyalty, increasing distribution costs" (both via Hospitality.today).
What would have to change for agents to replace Booking.com?
Three things would have to change before agents could replace Booking.com for hotels. Hotels would need to give agents bookable rates and inventory directly, the way Hilton, Marriott and IHG now do through Google AI Mode. Agents would need to complete bookings reliably on brand and independent hotel sites, which Muse could not do in Skift's October tests. And the agent route would need to cost a hotel less than an OTA commission.
The third point is less certain than it sounds. Leidinger expects personal agents to become commissionable channels, and Skift reports Meta has said it will eventually charge for transactions through Muse. Booking.com does not publish a standard hotel commission, so the rate sits in each property's contract. If an agent charges a hotel a fee and still needs an OTA to find the room, the hotel's cost of a booking may not fall at all.
What should independent hotels and rental operators do in 2026?
Independent hotels have the most to gain and the least bargaining power. In Cloudbeds' 2026 report on 90 million bookings, OTAs supplied 63.4% of independent hotel bookings in 2025, close to 80% in some markets (Cloudbeds). The chains are plugging into agents through launch partnerships, and Skift's report on Google AI Mode named no route for independents, so for most independents the agent path still runs through an OTA.
What an independent can control is the information an agent reads and the answers it gets. Keep rates, fees, policies and amenities the same on your own site and on every OTA listing, because an agent compares them. Answer pre-booking questions fast on every channel. Our post on how hotels rank on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini covers the visibility side, and the 5-minute rule covers response time.
After the booking, the property does the work no matter which channel sold the room. Under Google AI Mode the hotel or OTA handles support, and a hotel booked by Muse routes problems to the OTA or hotel brand (Travelers Today, September 11, 2026). That conversation (check-in questions, changes, requests, upsells) is the part I work on at Conduit. We build AI agents that answer guest messages and calls for hotels and rental operators. Conduit does not take bookings or replace an OTA. If you are comparing tools for that job, our ranked list of guest communication platforms shows how we score them.
FAQ
Booking.com's exposure to AI agents shows up in figures it reports each quarter, so each answer below gives the number and the date it was reported. The sources are the filings, earnings calls and articles linked above, read on October 8, 2026, and I will update them after the third-quarter calls.
Will AI agents replace Booking.com?
AI agents are unlikely to replace Booking.com in the near term. Booking said in August 2026 that traffic from large language models was "significantly below 1%" of its room nights, and agents such as Meta's Muse still shop OTA sites to book hotels.
How much of Booking.com's business comes from ChatGPT and other AI tools?
Booking.com gets a very small share of its business from AI tools. Its CFO said on August 4, 2026 that paid and unpaid traffic from large language models was "significantly below 1%" of room nights, with no material change over recent quarters.
Can AI agents book hotels directly with the hotel?
AI agents can book some hotels directly. Google AI Mode lets travelers book Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Wyndham and Choice hotels in the chat, with the hotel as the seller, and IHG counts those as direct bookings. Skift's launch report named no route for independent hotels.
Are Booking.com and Expedia working with ChatGPT and Google?
Booking.com and Expedia work with both. Both run apps inside ChatGPT, both are launch partners for hotel booking in Google AI Mode, Booking is in OpenAI's paid CPC test, and Expedia was an early adopter of ChatGPT's ad product.
Will booking through an AI agent be cheaper for hotels than an OTA?
Booking through an AI agent may not be cheaper for hotels. Hilton's CIO expects personal agents to become commissionable channels, and Meta has said it will eventually charge for Muse transactions, so the saving depends on fees nobody has published yet.
What should independent hotels do about AI agents in 2026?
Independent hotels should keep their rates and property facts consistent everywhere, answer guest questions quickly on every channel, and treat the OTA as the likely agent route for now. OTAs supplied 63.4% of independent hotel bookings in 2025 in Cloudbeds' data.
